Welcome to Science at Port Perry High School.

Parents

Dear Parents & Guardians,

It is my belief that it takes a community to raise a child.  We each play a significant role in the lives of our youth, but it is the collaborative whole that truly shapes the lives of our children.  It is therefore important that we work together to ensure the success of our children.

As your child’s classroom teacher, I will do my best to:

·         Ensure that your child is in a safe and healthy learning environment

·         Help your child work to their full potential and self-worth

·         Empower your child to be a leader in the classroom, school and community

·         Maintain a consistent standard of behavior for all students

·         Demonstrate respect for self, each other and property

·         Communicate regularly with you through a variety of means

I would respectively ask that you assist me with our goal of ensuring success in our children by:

·         Showing an active interest in your child’s school work and progress

·         Encourage your child to get involved and take an active role in their school

·         Communicate regularly with me

·         Assist your child in coming to school prepared to learn and appropriately dressed

·         Ensuring that your child attends school regularly and on time

·         Becoming familiar with the Code of Conduct and school rules, and encouraging your child to follow these rules

·         Assisting me in dealing with discipline issues

I welcome you to take a look at the tab that corresponds with your child’s course of study.  Here you will find general information about the course and expectations. I also welcome you to visit my vermicomposting tab.  Here you will find information on a waste reduction initiative within the school and how you can get involved.

Feel free to contact me with stories of success and/or with concerns by email or by phone.  If I’m not immediately available, I will return your correspondence as soon as possible.

Regards,

Kathy Schilling

Community

Dear Community Partners,

Thank you for taking the time to view my webpage.   It is my belief that it takes a community to raise a child.  We each play a significant role in the lives of our youth, but it is the collaborative whole that truly shapes the lives of our children.  It is therefore important that we work together to ensure the success of our children.

Individuals and individual companies within the community provide valuable, authentic applications that are essential in developing well informed, responsible citizens for the future.  The many opportunities available to students help to develop stewardship and awareness.

Activities that take place outside of the regular classroom give students the opportunities to explore, observe, participate in and reflect on a variety of sector-specific experiences and careers.  It is our hope, that together, we increase student awareness of, and develop essential skills and work habits required in the workforce.

How Can You Help?

In the past, we’ve been fortunate to have guest speakers come to the school to share with us experiences and areas of expertise.  We’ve also been able to bring students to you and together have developed a suitable agenda for a day.  There are many other ways you can help.  Here are a few:

·       Job Shadowing:  Student would observe an employee for a day

·       Audit:  Students would conduct an “audit” of your place of employment/ business

·       Tour:  Students would tour or visit your place of employment/business

·       Interview:  Students would conduct an interview of an employee

·       Funding:  Provide sponsorship and/or funding toward the many programs and initiatives within the school

I also welcome you to visit my vermicomposting tab.  Here you will find information on a waste reduction initiative within the school and how you can get involved.

We would be grateful for any help.  It is the generosity of the individuals and individual companies within the community that bring learning to reality.   If you’re able to help in any way, please contact me by email or phone.  If I’m not immediately available, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Kathy Schilling

Vermicomposting

“I believe, people want to do the right thing thereby helping to shape a more sustainable planet for future generations.”

Welcome to Vermicomposting (Worm Composting)

It is so rewarding to see more and more people, of all ages, developing interest in environmentally sustainable practices.  This is not always an easy task in today’s society of over packaging and consumerism.

Already a gold medal recipient with Ontario ecoSchools, the students and staff of Port Perry High School are taking part in vermicomposting as a sustainable waste reduction initiative.

Why Vermicompost?

·         You can continue to compost all year long because the bins are kept indoors.

·         It’s an easy, clean and sustainable way to reduce garbage waste.

·         It’s a great way to actively involve young children in becoming stewards of the environment.

·         Worms produce beautiful black compost called “castings”. It’s a nitrogen rich fertilizer, and it’s not synthetic.  Castings are also known to provide three times more calcium and several times more nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium than the soil alone.

·         Castings contain a high percentage of humus. Humus helps soil particles form into clusters, which create channels for the passage of air and improve its capacity to hold water.

·         Humic acid present in humus, provides binding sites for the plant nutrients but also releases them to the plants upon demand.

·         Humus is believed to aid in the prevention of harmful plant pathogens, fungi, nematodes and bacteria.

·         Castings contain the microbes that help your plants access nutrients and create healthy soil, that’s why it’s one of the best soil additives on the planet.

·         Castings help to develop healthier & stronger plants, enhances germination, plant growth, and crop yield.

·         Castings improve soil texture, quality, and water holding capacity.

·         Castings adds plant hormones such as auxins and gibberellic acid, and adds enzymes such as phosphates and cellulose.

·         Castings can be used to make compost tea (worm tea).  The resulting liquid is used as a fertilizer.

Port Perry High School will be selling castings as well as complete vermicomposting kits.   Kits include a recycling box sized bin, a very generous 1lb of worms (more like 2 – 3 lbs), bedding (shredded newspaper, soil, water), agricultural lime, manual, and support.  Castings are generally sold in 1L containers for $2 and complete kits are sold for $45 each.

Note:  Castings are mixed with soil in a 1 to 9 part ratio (1 part castings to 9 parts soil).  A little goes a long way!

Want to Support Our Initiative?

There are two ways you can help:

1.     Purchase castings for your garden.  Castings become available two times during the school year; fall (around late October) and spring (around early May).  You are encouraged to place an order by contacting me via email.  Please leave me your name, number and the amount of castings you wish to purchase.  Note that castings are in limited supply and tend to go quickly.  By reserving your quantity, you’ll be guaranteed to be the first in line.  Don’t be disappointed, reserve today.

2.    Get the entire family involved by purchasing a complete kit for your home.  It’s a great way to spend valuable time with your children and to encourage environmental stewardship.  It’s not only educational, it’s fun too!  The biggest concern I hear from adults about bringing worms into the house is about sanitation.  Believe it or not, the worms are cleaner than we are!  A well-kept bin doesn’t smell either.

Please contact me with your orders.  Thank you.

Students

Dear Student,

Welcome to my student-teacher page.   The information below sets out our responsibilities, to each other, to help ensure your success.

As your classroom teacher, I will do my best to:

·         Ensure that the classroom is a safe and healthy learning environment

·         Help you work toward your full potential and self-worth

·         Be available to assist you when required

·         Empower you to be a leader in the classroom, school and community

·         Maintain a consistent standard of behavior for all students

·         Demonstrate respect for self, each other and property

·         Communicate fairly with you when dealing with discipline issues

·         Communicate regularly with your parents and/or guardians

In return, I hope that you will demonstrate respect and responsibility by:

·         Coming to school prepared, on time and ready to learn

·         Seeking assistance when required

·         Preparing for quizzes and tests, and by submitting all assigned work in a timely fashion

·         Trying your best at all times

·         Participating constructively in classroom discussions and listening attentively to others

·         Refraining from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others

·         Following the established rules and Code of Conduct

·         Taking responsibility for your actions

·         Showing respect for yourself, others and the property around you

Take a proactive approach to your learning.  When you are having difficulty with a topic, take the time to review the lesson, ask a friend for help, ask your parents for insight, ask another teacher that you trust and let the classroom teacher know.  Don’t wait until quiz or test time for clarification.  Act right away.  Don’t forget, teachers are here to help.

Many adults reflect on their secondary school experience as being one of the best times of their lives.  The majority of them were involved in extra-curricular programs.  Port Perry High School is a vibrant school with much to offer.  Get involved and be proud to be a part of the Port Perry High School Community.
